Israelis have assembled throughout the country to remember 24 months since the Hamas-initiated assault on that fateful day in October 2023, as negotiations advanced in the neighboring country over a resolution to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

The attack led to more than 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as captives. It was the single most lethal day for Jewish people since the Holocaust.

Israel answered by initiating a military offensive in Gaza which has killed over 67,000 people, based on figures from the area's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its figures are seen as accurate by the United Nations and other global organizations.

"Our bloodthirsty enemies have hit us hard, but they have not defeated us," Benjamin Netanyahu remarked on that day.

He also vowed to "achieve all the aims of the war: the release of all the captured, the removal of the Hamas administration and the guarantee that Gaza will no longer pose a risk to Israel".

Memorial Events Across Israel

The national leadership rescheduled state remembrance events until October 16th - after the conclusion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but events still were held across the country on that day.

A memorial ceremony for the loved ones of Israeli citizens who lost their lives in the Hamas incident was conducted in the coastal city. Arranged by the affected families, it was aired on Israeli TV networks.

Some time earlier, a moment of silence was respected throughout the country.

Negotiation Meetings in Egypt

Simultaneously, the conflicting parties' delegations gathered in the North African coastal city of Sharm el-Sheikh for a continuing round of indirect talks to examine the provisions of the plan.

A high-ranking representative involved in the discussions indicated that an night meeting of mediated discussions commenced at 19:00 Cairo time.

The representative stated the morning session finished without significant progress, due to differences over the suggested Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over assurances Hamas seeks to ensure Israel does not resume fighting after the initial stage of the arrangement.

He commented that the talks are "difficult and have not yet deliver any real breakthrough," but mentioned that intermediaries are working hard to reduce the differences between the both parties.

Key Matters in Discussions

  • An enduring ceasefire
  • The trade of the prisoners still kept by Hamas for detainees from Gaza
  • The removal of military personnel from Gaza
  • Plans for humanitarian aid deliveries
  • After-conflict administration of the area

Public Reaction

In the city's Hostages Square previously, young a woman - whose brother survived the assault on the outdoor event, where many attendees were killed and many more were taken hostage by Hamas gunmen - shared: "No location appears as home anymore and until each abducted person return not a single person will feel safe."

"Once we see all home again, we can relax again. Then we can start to rebuild," she added.

Outside the leader's home in the capital, people congregated to demonstrate their solidarity for the relatives of the captives. Israel reports nearly fifty stay in captivity in Gaza, twenty of whom are considered to be alive.

Demonstrator Atalia Regev stated: "It's necessary do any agreement required for the hostages to return. But we truly desire assurances that we will be secure."

Research now consistently show that around 70% of the population desire the conflict to finish in as payment for the liberation of the captives.

Palestinian Circumstances

At the location of the music event, those paying respects came together to remember the victims.

From that location, the boom of aerial bombardments and shelling could be noticed just a brief space away in Gaza, where observers indicated the heavy Israeli attacks carried on.

In Gaza City, attacks were reported in the dawn of that day in the western district, area and zone neighbourhoods and in the east side district of Sheikh Radwan, as well the settlement to the northwest.

"When the night comes, the anxiety comes with it," evacuated Gaza City resident a mother, whose teenage son was died by an Israeli aerial attack previously, shared.

"Me and my three children are terrified of the bombings. All the night we are sleeping together, clinging, notably my youngest child who rests his face on me all night."

"Constantly we look at the news to see developments. And I'm afraid that this truce will not be completed and that the fighting will resume to us."

Humanitarian Crisis

The medical facility in the urban area said it had received the remains of half dozen people by the afternoon, including a trio killed in an Israeli attack in the south part area.

A different healthcare center in the southern city of that area reported another two fatalities had been transported. A person was died by Israeli soldiers while looking for help to the south region, medical staff stated.
