The Mayor-Elect states his intention to make his home in the storied Gracie Mansion

New York City's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to live in the historic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the affordable apartment that was a central issue in his run for office.

An Iconic Home

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the official residence for the majority of New York City mayors from the World War II era.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a key issue, did not confirm he would live there right away following his victory in November.

"This decision was based on the security of my family and the imperative to directing all of my focus on implementing the affordability agenda New Yorkers supported," the Mayor-Elect declared in his announcement.

A Fond Farewell

He resided in the Queens borough of Astoria, a community renowned for its diverse immigrant populations and international dining.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: many thanks for showing us the best of New York City," he expressed.

"While I may no longer live in the neighborhood, the community will forever remain inside me and the work I do," he affirmed.

Political Debate

Throughout his race for mayor, Mamdani connected his core platform – to freeze the rent – to his personal living arrangements.

However his rivals, mainly former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for remaining in the rent-stabilized unit despite the fact that he is from a well-known family.

Not All Mayors Stayed

Some mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, preferred to remain in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side throughout his three terms, which ended in 2012.

In his view, Bloomberg felt it ought to be a place for civic gatherings, and advocated for a major refurbishment of the aging mansion.

A Grand New Home

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion near his swearing-in on 1 January, he will be surrounded by surroundings very different than his previous Astoria apartment.

Adorned in cream-colored walls, emerald shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home situated by the East River.

Inside, the ground floor of the Federal-style mansion is furnished to reflect the home's historical period.

The property, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also has enhanced security to protect the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

A number of people have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, told reporters that they experienced doors opening and closed by themselves, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "I don't care what anyone says," he insisted in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

The apartment he is leaving is rent-stabilized, which means the city sets limits on how much property owners can raise the rent each year.

City residents see such units as essential protections as the price of rent exceeds what many can afford.

Records showed Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from the property website Zillow, the average rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
