The Eurovision Song Contest Was Once a Whimsical Delight – But It Has Evolved Into a Cynical Way to Gloss Over Warfare.

A freshly coined initialism came to light a few months into the military campaign against Gaza. Referred to as WCNSF, it means “Injured child with no living relatives”. This designation is unique to Gaza, according to health professionals including paediatricians. Ordinarily, it is rare for medical staff to attend to a child who has been bereaved of their entire family. Yet, there has been absolutely nothing ordinary concerning the widespread destruction in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been eradicated and the number of children who have lost limbs is greater than that of any other place in the world. No sense of normalcy about numerous doctors returning from a devastated terrain with reports of children being systematically aimed at.

A Living Nightmare Despite a Announced Cessation of Hostilities

Gaza remains hell on earth. Vital medicines and equipment are not getting in those in need, and major human rights organizations contend that violations are ongoing. The Israeli government disputes these claims, consistent with how it denies all charges it is implicated in. Yet as young survivors are now freezing in improvised encampments, there is a little heartwarming news: nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from advancing its declared purpose of “unity and cultural exchange.” Eurovision will continue to extend a prestigious stage for Israel, even though a number of European countries have now withdrawn in objection. Because this, apparently, is what unity resembles.

Eurovision, of course banned Russia from taking part in 2022 over the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza seems entirely distinct.

A Selective Vision

Forget the fact that Israel was accused of questionable voting tactics last year in what could be seen as an effort to inject politics into Eurovision. Ignore the report that a toddler was reportedly killed in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Forget the fact that settler violence and coerced removal in the West Bank have escalated. Forget the fact that global media are still denied unfettered access in Gaza. All of this, it would seem, should be permitted to obstruct of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Show Goes On While Ignoring Staggering Tragedy

Eurovision marks seven decades next year – nearly twice the current lifespan of an individual in Gaza today. The show may go on, but it will find it impossible to reclaim the pure, unadulterated fun it historically embodied. A competition that was originally built on harmony has transformed into a blatant mechanism to whitewash war.
