Well, how was 2025 in your family? Did it seem entirely positive as people post on Facebook? Packed with A-grades for the children and wild themed fancy dress gatherings for the parents? Maybe it felt like a sea of frustration with only rare entertaining moments? Is any of this actually real, or is everyone now seven-fingered AI slop beings with unrealistic smiles?
I've corralled my thoughts for a reflection, willing or unwilling, to reflect on the most important thing in any given year: what titles we enjoyed the most. Let's get started:
Horizon Zero Dawn
"Why can't you pick just one?"
"You can't expect my definitive list."
In the mobile realm, she’s been playing Cityscapes and "attempting to locate adequate healthcare."
"Digitally?"
"In the actual world."
Overwatch
"I have no interest in games on my phone." He took umbrage that I even asked. I respect that.
Resident Evil Biohazard
Her goal is to get into theatre school, but when she wasn’t singing, she was playing Resident Evil. She also spoke at length in great detail about her accomplishments on The Sims, where her character has a thriving utopia with far better healthcare than her eldest sister has in real life.
Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time
She started the year at 60% completion and finished the year at eighty-two percent. It’s a marathon not a sprint for her. Her mobile diversion: something called Woodle, where you have to extract pins.
Minecraft
Whenever I see my adult son playing Minecraft, I give him a hard time like a cross between a relentless heckler. When he protests, I reply that I am behaving this way to prepare him so he can be a man and play games for adults. This defines our Scottish father/son relationship.
Eldest Daughter on Just Dance 2024
She was the clear winner for this one. She is unstoppable. More impressive than I was at my peak gaming days in my prime.
Marvel Snap
Nothing came close to the hours I spent on this exceptionally well-crafted card game competitive game, with its regularly updated range of cards and game variations.
Marvel Snap
The downside about games that constantly evolve their range is you eventually realize and realise it is all just an attempt to suck you into fomo-fuelled microtransactions. So affection became resentment halfway through the year and it went into the bin.
Doom: The Dark Ages
Stunning reinvention of a classic franchise. Engrossing atmosphere from the off. I wish I could dispatch my issues so effectively in real life.
Blue Prince
I decline to rush this stunning, original game and I just lacked the time or headspace to give it what it deserved earlier this year. With holiday guests over the festive period, I aim to experience this in the late night after evening drinks.
Balatro
I'm aware Balatro was 2024’s breakout game, but I was late to it. And it is incredible. It just gets absolutely everything right. Crazy Poker is a wonderful concept, but the effects behind the different special cards are so imaginative it has become a game I would happily play at any hour. Add in the cleverness of the card design, and this is an true pinnacle of gaming. I dream of being stuck in a elevator for hours just so I have the perfect excuse but play it.
Outer Worlds 2
I received a wave of criticism when I critiqued how a glitch in another game damaged the experience for me, but that other title is still a colossal gaming achievement in terms of production values – which I appreciated even more after experiencing Outer Worlds 2. So my appreciation goes out to the individual who took the time to contact me to say that my Outer Worlds 2 review was "missing the point". I present that as written, because I acknowledge the engagement, and she is obviously an astute judge of character.
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Fine. Give me a punishingly tough Metroidvania-esque thing and leave me without guidance on what I am supposed to be doing, except "figure it out". What a joy. I acknowledge that it has great art and is flawless if you are into the genre, but I cannot think of a gaming experience I desire less in my adulthood. I was around back when many games were like this, and I'm over it. It was fine when I was a kid, but the same could be said for many outdated things.
Debate between corporate partnerships that sparked debate, and expensive game releases. Both ethically dubious and concerning.
Clair Obscur, Despelote and Bananza would all make interesting names called from the back door at dinner time.
Right Thumb Joint. Seriously. I don’t know if it’s because of button mashing or endless scrolling, but it is sore like hellfire in the mornings now. I knew I should have got my thumbs looked after back in the day.
Grand Theft Auto VI.
And it will come out in 2026, even if we have to stretch time until the cows come home.
The Witcher 4.
