New Trump Doctrine Identifies The Continent's Core Issue: An Alleged Shortfall of Racism?

During his first term, commentators frequently advised that the former president's statements should be taken seriously rather than literally. Yet, real-world experience indicate that this approach could have got it backwards.

From Financial Contributions to Cultural Anxiety

In his interview, Trump himself connects these dots in a form of wish-fulfillment exercise. He acknowledges that the Kremlin wants a divided Europe. Trump proclaims Europe is weak, and by publicly highlighting the fissures between the transatlantic alliance, he objectively helps Putin by actively undermining European unity—all while denying any responsibility.

This dynamic is playing out at possibly the most consequential moment for Europe in decades, amid a devastating war in Ukraine and rising provocations elsewhere on the continent.

While Europe cleaves ever tighter to Ukraine amid persistent threats of American abandonment, the peril is that Trump has rationalized a rationale for ignoring European leaders.

The European Response

This situation demands a firm response from European leadership. While some figures, including Germany's leader, have been forceful in their pushback, including British officials—have opted for a strategy of seeking to placate the U.S. administration.

Recently, a Downing Street spokesperson declined to push back on the president's remarks about Europe or his renewed attack on London Mayor Sadiq Khan.

They said, "He has a strong relationship with the U.S. president and a strong relationship with the Mayor of London, and is focused on cooperating with each to achieve stronger results for the people."

The stark reality is that the president intends his words and says them repeatedly. The time has come to abandon the pretense that things are different.
