Jets Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Incident

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.

Glenn noted that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during a recent discussion.

“That’s what eases my mind, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His wife and child, they are doing well and he will come through this without issue.”

It remained unclear when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where his condition is described as serious yet stable.

“Still unsure,” he added. “However, I can share, just talking to him, he felt really upbeat. And again, that reassures me, that he feels like that and he expresses himself so positively.”

New York police shared video stills earlier this week of a man sought in the shooting of Boyd. What prompted the attack remains under investigation and officials stated it’s not clear if Boyd was the intended victim. There were no additional victims as confirmed by officials.

The incident occurred in the early morning on Sunday morning near MSG and Times Square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was taken to Bellevue Hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, as reported. The assailant escaped.

Glenn mentioned Boyd has been on his mind “a great deal” since the news broke. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a baby.

“My initial concern, he recently became a father,” Glenn said. “I thought of his spouse, considering his child and I hope he recovers fully. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“A certain process is underway, I’ll keep private, but I am pleased that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd did not participate during the current season, his debut year with New York, after being placed on injured reserve on August 18 with an injury to his shoulder that involved surgical repair.

Boyd came to New York as a new signing in March and was expected to be a significant contributor of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was injured during a training camp practice on 2 August and had to be helped off.

Boyd continued to be present all season long while working his way back.

“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn commented. “Certainly, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, began his career with the Vikings after his selection in the later rounds by the Vikings out of Texas University in the 2019 draft. He joined Arizona in last year and moved to Houston’s squad later that season. Boyd signed a one-year contract for $1.6 million with New York in March.
