A renowned South African media personality and entertainer has been fatally gunned down in the country's largest city Johannesburg, triggering widespread grief across a country battling persistent crime.
Warrick Stock, who went by the name DJ Warras, was attacked in the city centre on Tuesday afternoon.
Authorities reported the 40-year-old media personality was accosted by a trio of assailants, one of whom began shooting at him before fleeing on foot.
The purpose of the attack is unknown and no one has been arrested are in custody, police said.
Authorities said that Stock was ambushed as he was exiting a location close to the city center landmark.
He had been present for hours at the site managing the setup of security systems, which had been illegally inhabited by unknown people, according to reports.
"The report indicates the deceased was confronted by three unidentified men after parking his vehicle, and they opened fire at him before escaping on foot," a police statement confirmed.
Security camera video reportedly depicted a suspect with dreadlocked hair and wearing what appeared to be a security uniform shooting on Stock before running away.
The DJ tried to run away after he was wounded but collapsed a short distance away.
It was further revealed that Stock had an gun that was not fired and it was not a robbery during the incident.
Key evidence, like bullet casings, were found at the scene.
Officials are asking anyone who saw the event who may have seen the suspects to contact them.
"We know they covered significant ground after the attack, and officers have been following their trail to find their destination," stated a police chief.
His family member, Nicole Stock, expressed the family was struggling to understand the tragedy.
"I am in shock. I cannot express the pain," were her words.
"Everyone understood he was a champion for numerous individuals. He was a fearless commentator about issues not many people were prepared to speak about. This is a devastating blow."
She appealed to the community to avoid sharing disturbing footage from the scene, saying this was an extremely painful time, especially for Stock's children.
Stock was the star of Ngicel' iVisa, a reality show that premiered on a South African TV network.
Apart from his work in broadcasting, Stock was active in various business ventures, including security provision, providing elite guarding services and protecting major functions across South Africa.
He was also reportedly involved in real estate operations and participated in building evictions.
His murder has shocked the country and triggered an outpouring of tributes from his followers, the authorities and political parties.
A government minister commented he was furious and grief-stricken by Stock's untimely death.
"He was forthright boldly and honestly. He even challenged me and my decisions as a public official. He was a shining model of who we should be," he stated.
A party figurehead commented the "audacious attack of DJ Warras in broad daylight is a trauma for all South Africans".
