In the past, Anthony Barry featured in League Two. Currently, his attention is fixed to assist Thomas Tuchel secure World Cup glory in 2026. His journey from athlete to trainer started as an unpaid coach with the youth team. He remembers, “Nights, a small field, tasked with 11 vs 11 … poor equipment, limited resources,” and he fell in love with it. He realized his purpose.
Barry's progression is incredible. Beginning as Paul Cook’s assistant, he established a name through unique exercises and excellent people skills. His club career included top European clubs, plus he took on international positions for Ireland, Belgium, and Portugal. His players include stars like Thiago Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Cristiano Ronaldo. Now, with England, he's fully immersed, the “pinnacle” in his words.
“Everything starts with a dream … But I’m a believer that dedication shifts obstacles. You dream big and then you plan: ‘What's the process, gradually?’ We dream about winning the World Cup. Yet dreams alone aren't enough. It's essential to develop a methodical process so we can for optimal success.”
Passion, particularly on fine points, characterizes his journey. Putting in long hours under the sun—sometimes the moon, too, the coaching duo test boundaries. The approach involve psychological profiling, a strategy for high temperatures for the finals abroad, and building a true team. The coach highlights “Team England” and rejects terms including "pause".
“It's not time off or a break,” Barry says. “We had to build something that the players want to be part of and, secondly, they feel so stretched that it’s a breather.”
The assistant coach says and Tuchel as “very greedy”. “We aim to control each element of play,” Barry affirms. “We strive to own the whole ground and that’s what we spend many of our days on. It’s our job not just to keep up of the trends and to lead and innovate. It's an ongoing effort to have this problem/solution-finding mentality. And to simplify complexity.
“There are 50 days together with the team ahead of the tournament. We must implement an intricate approach for a tactical edge and we must clarify it during that time. It’s to take it from concept to details to knowledge to execution.
“To build a methodology that allows us to be productive in the 50 days, we must utilize all the time available from when we started. During periods without the team, we have to build relationships with each player. We must dedicate moments in calls with players, we have to see them in stadiums, understand them, connect with them. If we limit ourselves to that time, it's impossible.”
The coach is focusing for the final pair in the qualifying campaign – against Serbia at Wembley and in Albania. They've already ensured their place at the finals with six wins out of six with perfect defensive records. But there will be no easing off; instead. This is the time to strengthen the squad's character, to maintain progress.
“Thomas and I are both pretty clear that the football philosophy ought to embody all the positives of English football,” Barry says. “The physicality, the versatility, the strength, the honesty. The Three Lions kit must be difficult to earn but light to wear. It ought to be like a superhero's cape and not body armour.
“To make it light, we need to provide a system that lets them to play freely as they do in club games, that resonates with them and allows them to take the handbrake off. They must be stuck less in thinking and increase execution.
“There are morale boosts you can get as a coach at both ends of the pitch – playing out from the back, attacking high up. Yet, in the central zone of the pitch, those 24 metres, we feel the game has become stuck, particularly in the Premier League. Everybody has so much information these days. They can organize – defensive shapes. Our aim is to focus on accelerating the game in that central area.”
His desire for improvement is all-consuming. When he studied for his pro license, he was worried over the speaking requirement, especially as his class featured big names like Lampard and Carrick. For self-improvement, he went into the most challenging environments he could find to practise giving them. Including a prison in his home city of Liverpool, where he also took inmates in a football drill.
Barry graduated in 2020 at the top of the class, and his research paper – focusing on set-pieces, where he studied numerous set-plays – was published. Frank was one of those impressed and he brought Barry to his team at Stamford Bridge. After Lampard's dismissal, it spoke volumes that the team dismissed virtually all of his coaches while keeping Barry.
His replacement at Stamford Bridge took over, and, four months later, they claimed the Champions League. When he was let go, Barry remained with Potter. Once Tuchel resurfaced with Bayern, he got Barry out away from London to work together again. English football's governing body see them as a double act akin to Gareth Southgate and Steve Holland.
