Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer behind many legendary styles favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has sadly died at the age of 80.

His reputation was built on his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the light-hued ensembles that featured in the iconic band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "the song Rio".

"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance online."

His passing follows just weeks after he presented his most recent collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. The performer Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the famous black velvet "revenge dress" historically worn by Diana, Princess of Wales.

A Lasting Legacy

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price relocated to London at the start of the 1960s to enroll at the renowned Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he started his work in clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was responsible for the body-hugging, buttoned trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger sported during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show was launched by creations worn by model Jerry Hall, who later wore the bridal gown Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A key creative partner of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His characteristic talent to fuse menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in shaping body-hugging looks established him as a "genuine original," in the words of the British Fashion Council.

During the nineties, he started creating pieces for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included various looks for her US tour following her marriage.

Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London last month in partnership with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Architectural Forms: A hallmark of his work.
  • Dramatic Impact: Defining an era of music fashion.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Creating a unique, androgynous style.
  • A Client List from Rock to Royalty: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

The fashion world laments the passing to a authentic original whose legacy on style and culture remains deeply ingrained.
